Expect ochre cliffs, 500-year-old monasteries and the walled city of Lo Manthang, where we spend a full day on the gompas and the sky caves to the north. Yes. It's one of the few places in Nepal where July and August work well. Getting there can be disrupted, though, because the flights to Jomsom and the road up the Kali Gandaki are both affected by weather further south. Build in buffer days.
Yes. Restricted-area permits are only issued through a registered agency, and they need a minimum group size and a licensed guide. Solo trekking isn't allowed here, however experienced you are.
Very much so, and we guide solo women here regularly. Because it's a restricted area, you'll have a guide with you the whole way, and the lodges in Mustang are family-run and used to hosting foreign women. Ask in advance if you'd like a female guide and we'll do our best to arrange it.
It's easier on the lungs, because you're lower, and harder on morale, because of the wind, the sun and the lack of shade. Most people who have done both find Mustang less physically demanding overall.
Upper Mustang, Lo Manthang is graded Moderate and tops out at 3,840 m. In our Trek Finder it comes up for walkers who pick “Comfortable with long day hikes” or a harder answer, and “Happy up to about 4,800 m” or higher on altitude.
