Ghandruk Gurung Village Trek

Three days to the handsomest village in the Annapurnas — slate roofs, stone lanes and Annapurna South filling the end of the street.

Ghandruk Gurung Village Trek — drop a photo

Ghandruk is the trek we send people on when they want the Himalaya without the altitude. Two hours by jeep gets you to the trailhead; from there it is terraced hillside, stone staircases and Gurung farmhouses to a village of slate roofs stacked up the slope with Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre standing directly above it. Nothing here goes above 2,100 m, so there is no acclimatization, no thin air and no early starts unless you want the sunrise. Most guests spend the second afternoon in the village museum, drinking tea with the family that owns the lodge, and decide they should have booked another night.

Why you'll love it

  • Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre from the village itself — no viewpoint climb needed
  • Gurung slate-and-stone architecture and the old Gurung Museum
  • Low enough to walk in any month, including winter
  • Short jeep transfer — more time walking, less time driving

Day by day

A two-hour jeep up the Modi Khola to Kimche, then a steady hour and a half of stone steps into the village. Drop your bag, walk the upper lanes before dark, and watch the light go orange on Annapurna South.
