Chitwan National Park is a half-day drive from Pokhara and nothing like the hills. You go out on jeep and canoe safaris with the park naturalists, and you'll almost certainly see one-horned rhinos. The park also has gharial crocodiles and 500 bird species, and there's a Tharu cultural evening too. The price covers the lodge with all meals, every safari and the park fees, a naturalist guide and the tourist bus from Pokhara. Drinks and tips are extra.

Five to six hours by road, which our package covers with the tourist bus, or a short flight to Bharatpur and a half-hour drive. We usually build it into a route, not a return trip, and Pokhara to Chitwan to Kathmandu works well.
There's a small but real risk, which is why the guides are armed and the briefing covers what to do if a rhino charges. Incidents are rare. If you're nervous, take the jeep and enjoy it without the adrenaline.
The stick dance comes from local Tharu tradition, though the evening shows are packaged for visitors. We think it's worth an hour. If you have the time, a community-run homestay in the buffer zone gives you a far better version.
