Khayer Lake Trek

Eight days past Khopra Ridge to a sacred lake at 4,665 m under the Annapurna south wall.

The shrine at Khayer Lake wrapped in prayer flags after fresh snowfall

This is the hard version of Khopra. From the ridge lodge at 3,660 m the trail keeps going north up a bare hanging valley to Khayar Lake at 4,665 m, a pilgrimage site under Annapurna South where Hindu families come to bathe at the August full moon. The day up and back is nine hours, a thousand metres of gain and loss at real altitude, on scree and often snow — the reason we grade the whole trek strenuous even though the rest of it is teahouse walking. Get it on a clear morning and you are standing on a frozen lake with the south face of Annapurna I directly above and nothing between you and it.

Why you'll love it

  • Khayar Lake at 4,665 m, a working pilgrimage site under Annapurna South
  • Khopra Ridge lodge — arguably the best-sited teahouse in the region
  • Muldai View Point at 3,637 m on the way in
  • The full Dhaulagiri wall across the Kali Gandaki gorge
  • Serious altitude and a serious day, on a trail almost nobody walks

Jeep to the roadhead and the stone climb into Ghandruk. Gentle first day by design.
